Historically, getting to Jericoacoara was an odyssey. This played a key role in maintaining its charm. Options have improved.

Option A: The Direct Flight (The Game Changer)

Jericoacoara Regional Airport (JJD)(official name Comandante Ariston Pessoa Airport) is located in the neighboring municipality of Cruz.

Flights: There are direct flights from São Paulo(GRU/VCP) and Belo Horizonte(CNF), as well as connections from Recife or Fortaleza.

The Transfer: It takes about 40-50 minutes from JJD airport to Hotel Hurricane. But this is no ordinary taxi ride. You have to book a 4x4 transfer (Hilux or similar). The vehicle will drive on the road for some time, then enter the National Park, deflate its tires and drive through the dunes and along the beach to reach the hotel. It is a spectacular arrival.

Option B: From Fortaleza (The Classic Route)

If you fly into Fortaleza International Airport (FOR), you are about 300km away.

Private 4x4: This is the most comfortable but expensive option. A driver picks you up at FOR and drives about 4 hours on the highway to Jijoca, and then 40 minutes through the sand to the hotel. Total time: ~4.5 to 5 hours.

The Bus (Fretcar): This is the option for the budget traveler. The bus takes you from Fortaleza airport to Jijoca de Jericoacoara town. In Jijoca, everyone must alight and get into a "Jardineira" (big open truck adapted for sand). The truck drives through the dunes to the village. Normally it drops off somewhere central and you have to walk or take a buggy to the hotel door. Total time: ~7 hours.

Jericoacoara charges you a Sustainable Tourism Tax (Taxa de Turismo Sustentável). You have to pay this.

Pre-payment: Highly recommended that you pay this online (site of the Prefeitura de Jijoca) before you arrive. You will get a QR code.

No Cars Policy: Once inside the town, all tourists must leave their vehicles in a parking lot. There is more than one to choose from, and they are all privately owned. None belong to the municipality or Intendencia (National Parks Administration).

Do not attempt to drive a rental car to the hotel. The streets of the village are off-limits to private cars unless you happen to be a resident. Park in the official lot at the entrance to the village (Estacionamento da Vila). From there, "Jardineira" shuttle will take you and your luggage up to Hotel Hurricane. Much easier just simply book a transfer, and do not bother about some car.
